Developing Oracy in Multilingual Classrooms (Webinar)
This webinar looks at how teaching staff and EAL co-ordinators can support multilingual learners to develop their oracy skills.
Developing strong oracy skills is now considered a vital part of a balanced curriculum, and has never been more important for those pupils who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL), whose linguistic development is central to unlocking their potential at school and later in life.
This webinar will explore the key issues teaching staff must consider when planning how to develop the oracy skills of multilingual learners in an English-medium classroom.
We will share practical oracy activities and resources designed to support multilingual students with differing English proficiency levels and across different subject areas at both primary and secondary stages. Participants will also learn how assessment and teacher development (CPD) can be adapted to ensure oracy activities are used effectively with multilingual learners.
Areas of focus will include:
- Understanding EAL learners’ varying language exposure and proficiency in English in order to plan tailored oracy activities.
- The importance of home language development and own-language use.
- Appreciating the different varieties and registers of English that learners will encounter.
