Course dates: 14 January – 14 February 2025.

Ticket sales end: 13 January 2025, 9 AM UK time (UTC +0)

Length: minimum of 5 hours of online study over a 4.5-week period.

About the course

This course for international school staff is the first in a set of two courses covering Language for Learning. This first course aims to increase your understanding of particular features of the English language which research has shown to be more problematic for learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL). It will also cover strategies for providing effective linguistic feedback to individual learners to facilitate their speaking and writing skills. Armed with this information, you will be in a better position to support multilingual learners to access and understand curriculum content.

The second course in the series, Embedding Language for Learning, focuses mainly on academic English. It aims to develop participants’ academic language awareness and help teaching staff plan and teach lessons that develop academic language for multilingual learners. You are welcome to enrol on the second course whether you have completed the first course in the series or not, but if you think that both courses would be of benefit to you, we strongly recommend you complete them in the suggested order.

Who is this course for?

  • Primary and secondary teaching staff who are not language specialists and who want to develop their ability to plan for language development and provide linguistic feedback on their learners' work.

This course is not appropriate for:

  • Teaching staff with a solid knowledge and understanding of English grammatical structures and metalanguage.
  • MFL teachers
  • EAL/EFL teachers
  • EAL co-ordinators.
